Years after Hurricane Katrina, cheap Joe, drugstore along and his wife, is still rebuilding his house, weathering moments that could crush the resolve of the most upbeat person. Joe’s home and neighborhood proved no match for breached levees. A builder by profession, he was in the process of rebuilding when all of his tools and floors were stolen out of his house. But little by little, year after year, Joe looks beyond setbacks, unfairness and disappointments. His life may not return to what was, but he is filled with the promise of what is now possible.
During my radio interview, I searched Joe’s face for traces of resentment, anger, bitterness or a battered spirited. I found none. Joe says he refuses to allow broken levees, delays, or even thousands of stolen dollars due to contractor fraud to drown his faith or genuine belief in the goodness of others. “I wouldn’t change a thing,” Joe proclaimed. “It’s hard, but not impossible with God.”
Yesterday is over. A new day is at hand, remedy ripe with new possibilities, new opportunities, and new reasons to be grateful.
Each moment, we have the power to put the past behind us and embrace our a new chapter, new reality, or new revelation. Each moment, we have the privilege of releasing yesterday’s stranglehold on our dreams. We can forgive ourselves for the moments when we were unkind, over-reacted, disappointed or wallowed in self-pity.
Let us take on this new day, armed with high expectations, unwavering faith and the promise of realized dreams.
The moment you declare yourself a thing, there the opposite will immediately show up in your life. The moment you declare yourself brave, sick courageous and ready take action on your dream – doubt, second-guessing and feelings of unworthiness creep into your spirit.
The moment you declare yourself calm, loving, and the one who decides that peace is better than self-righteousness – discord, aggravation or resentment overtakes you. The moment you declare yourself optimistic, encouraged and blessed– you feel overwhelmed and defeated.
The ego is insidious. Fear is devious. The attacks are quick and no one is exempt. Be aware. Stand your ground, armed with faith, prayer and truth. Embody the thing your declare yourself to be.
Delays. Denials. Disappointment. What appeared to be an easy journey, mind a no-brainer, your date with destiny, or proclaimed support by those in power, now seems headed for derailment, ridicule and locked doors.
The way things appear can be misleading. It may appear that all is lost, but Faith will lead you to victory. It may appear that all are against you, but Discernment will give you wisdom and insight into the true intentions of others. It may appear that you are down for the count, but Determination will give you the strength to rise from the dirt and finish the race.
